Healing Begins When Pretending Ends

October 17, 2026 · A Rooted & Rising reflection

Sometimes ‘I’m fine’ is a habit. Sometimes it is a boundary. Sometimes it is the safest answer available in that room. You do not have to defend every choice you made to get through a day, and you do not owe anyone private details to prove that you are being honest.

A useful place to begin is a quieter question: what do I actually need right now? The answer might be rest, information, practical help, a different expectation, or qualified support. Naming that need privately can be enough for a first step. You do not have to turn it into a public story.

If you decide to ask for help, make the request as clear as you can: ‘Can you help me find the right contact?’ or ‘I need to change what I agreed to this week.’ Choose the person and setting with care. This reflection offers encouragement, not a promise that disclosure produces recovery or a substitute for professional care.

A question to carry with you

What need could you name without sharing more than you want to share?

You may reflect privately or use a fictional example. Personal disclosure is optional.
